ONE-DAY CLAY WORKSHOPS:
One-day workshops are designed to give you, as the student, the freedom to create a
substantial piece within one day. Works, in general, end up being around 25cm tall and 15cm wide, more or less.
No previous experience is needed, although I always encourage a creative heart. When we have our group for a particular workshop, I create a WhatsApp group to communicate all the details, like what to wear and what to bring.
Please look at the examples of previous workshops as inspiration. This is not an exhaustive list but a snippet of what is possible.
Recently, a student sent me a private message after such a day:” It feels like I have been on a two-week holiday.” Another comment I get is this: “I did not think of any of my problems or issues while I was busy for the day.”
Come and see what excellent medium clay is; you will see reflection in the celebration at the end of the day.
Home studio workshops:
Great-smelling coffee welcomes all students around 8:30-9 depending on the season. The morning is spent planning our piece for the day and getting it off to a good start. We allow our creative ideas to fly and maybe make changes.
Around 12, we break for a light lunch and a breather. Generally, no one wants to lunch for too long, and soon they find their way back into the studio.
The break was great, but now all attention is on their pieces and fine-tuning detail areas until we finish anything around 4.
Work will be hollowed out and left to dry until we can fire it, after which it will be ready for collection.
Out-of-town workshops:
If the workshop is out of the studio, I source kilns for work there.
The rest of the day normally goes the same as with the Home studio workshops.
Supplying a light lunch is up to the studio owner, where we will have the workshop and will be communicated via the WhatsApp group.
Materials for use:
All materials are covered by the workshop fee, which includes clay, sculpting tools, and anything else necessary to make your specific item.
One can also order clay from me for an additional amount. Depending on location, I will send you a quote.
Project of the day:
I allow each student the freedom to choose what he/she wants to make. They are welcome to communicate their idea via a direct message, after which I discern if it is doable in one day. I come prepared to give that idea wings.
Because I specialize in busts (head and shoulders) and figures, most choose to do that. If we do a Prophetic Clay Workshop, I usually do a bust, but are open to other possibilities.
Size of a class:
I like to facilitate for students between 7 and 10 in total.
Location:
I have facilitated in the following towns and cities in South Africa to give you an idea:
Koster Northwest
Wolmaransstad Northwest
Potchefstroom Northwest
Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha) Eastern Cape
Parys Freestate
Benoni Gauteng
Pretoria Gauteng
Johannesburg Gauteng
Southbroom Kwazulu Natal
Marble Hall Limpopo
Age:
Young adults and older are welcome for the workshops. If there is a need for a younger group, it is best to keep them separate.
